NHL Trade Deadline (updated 1:55pm)
Today at 2 pm is the final moment in the 2007-08 NHL season players can be moved between teams.
By tonight we will know what the Blues (and the rest of the NHL) will look like for the remainder of the season.
Last season the Blues traded away their top talent to receive high draft picks and also made a deal to grab Brad Boyes from Boston.
What will they do this season?
Confirmed transactions to follow: (my opinion)
2/25: Blues resign Barret Jackman- 4 years 14.4 mil. (good)
2/26: Bryce Salvador to NJ Devils for Cam Janssen (terrible)
2/26: Christian Backman to NY Rangers for 4th rd. pick in 08 draft (below average)

I figured Salvador would be gone since he will be a FA anyway. Jay McKee might be gone too. From what I've heard, they want to promote some of their younger talent, and make room on the payroll for a big name FA this summer (Hossa?). I knew they wouldn't go for a rental since they'll have a chance this summer ot lock them up for longer term under free agency.

Janssen is a grinder so I don't think it was a terrible trade. We had 8 or 9 good defenseman so one needed to go. Glad to see we resigned Jackman, maybe he'll step up his game now that he got his money. If they dump more salary then that's the sign that this season is over and they're back in the re-building phase.
Salvador was one of our best defenders. He played a solid game every game. Great penalty killer.
We already have a grinder, DJ King. We don't need another one.
Salvador should have gotten the Blues something much better.
Hey dude, is your place hiring? I would love to have a job where I can get paid to do what you do (don't do).
Who cares...
I'm stealing this post from a message board I frequent but it sums up how I feel too:
"Worst move of the day." So far, nothing's even come close.
Here's the site I keep checking.

So far, nothing's even come close to our Sal disaster. Not even CLOSE. We couldn't even get a draft pick? No, instead we got a winger who:
A) can't score (he has 1 goal in 95 NHL games...hey, he should fit right in here.) Rolling Eyes
B) is known only for fighting (but can't fight anymore since his shoulder had to be surgically rebuilt), Shocked
C) hails from St. Louis (which won't sell any more season tickets because everyone he knows in this town will get tix from him for free), Embarrassed
and
D) hasn't played an NHL game since his surgery (nothing like giving up a steady 82-game, reliable Dman for a grinder who may be one shoulder-check away from selling washing machines for Maytag) Confused
Please - someone, anyone - tell me how this move helped us. If this was the BEST deal you could get for Sal... then you don't need to be making trades at the NHL level. Seriously. This was not "asset management"... this was SQUANDERING. "
You said backman for a 4th round pick was ok? Terrible!!!!! So much for whatever it takes. A 4th round pick is someone who will bounce back and forth between STL and Peoria. Backman was pretty solid. It's pretty obvious that Dave Checketts is full of shit, they'll never bring a cup here if they try and rebuild with draft picks every year.
And I apoligize for the Janssen comment, I read a little more and he is worthless.
I changed it to below average after considering your comment.
I was just happy to be getting rid of Backman.
I haven't liked him for a while now.
Fuck the blues!!! I'm really pissed off. I was really hoping to see playoff hockey(even if they got bounced in the first round) for the first time in 4 years. I think I'm boycotting the rest of the season. We're only six points out of a playoff spot and management has already given up. I knew they wouldn't bring home a cup this year but had some higher expectations. Like a powerplay that could at least score more than 12% of the time and a team that averaged more than 27 shots a game. And we wonder why they can't win!!!
Kevin, even though you stole that post, thats probably the best thing I've read so far. I see absolutely no logic in this trade.
Here's one more thing about Sal to keep in mind...he is our plus minus leader at +12. Two of our best defensemen Barret Jackman (just resigned) and Brewer (our cap'n) are BOTH MINUS 12. Just for good measure (even though he isn't a D Man) Mcdonald is freaking -13. I know plus/minus can get overhyped a lot, but you can't tell me that it doesn't mean something here...especially with measuring the value of defensemen.
I really would have loved to keep Bryce. Getting rid of Backman I can understand. Resigning Jackman, while he hasn't had a good year this year, we got him at a decent price, and he is key to our defensive core (along with Brewer and Johnson).
Bottom line, if it were me: I would have unloaded McKee and Backman for some draft picks and thats it. Salvador may have been gone this summer anyway, but that is no excuse to just trade him for any piece of garbage with skates.
By the way, our grinder DJ King has 2 goals in 44 games (twice as many goals, in half as many games).
And no Doug, I am not ripping off ESPN.
I keep waiting for something good to trickle down the wire.
If this is all they do I'll be a little upset myself.
They needed a goal scorer and a solid backup for Manny and have done neither.
It's still possible something can happen; trades are still being approved by the NHL. But it's not looking good kids.
and I'll also add in that Backman should have gotten a thrid rounder...but I'm thinking it was a salary dump just like Sal. We better be getting someone awesome this summer.
They won't get anybody good this offseason. Pleau will get some washed up, over-priced veteran like he always does.
Draft picks are not the way to go. Look at Columbus. They have had a ton of picks over the past 8 drafts and still haven't made the playoffs.
And dustin, I know your not quoting espn. Maybe nhl.com? not sure yet :)
Was Kariya washed up and overpriced?
I think you are overreacting.
I'll never reveal my sources!
Yeah, and you're right about rebuilding. The Blues apparently already have a pretty good bunch of young guys ready to come up. There really is no need to trade for draft picks...especially 4th rd!
I really think its time to sh*t or get off the pot time for the Blues. This summer had better impress me, because I was pretty close to buying season tickets for next season. But before I show them the money, they need to show me something too!
Hopefully Richards couldn't get a flight to St. Louis. Great pickup for Dallas.
Glad we didn't go after Hossa, Pittsburgh gave up a lot for him.
Why the hell is Toivonen back up? He sucks!!!!!
And yes i am overreacting. I'm really dissapointed by management.
Yeah, Dallas is looking pretty scary now. Detroit has been on a horrible streak lately.
Did Pitt sign Hossa to a multi year deal or did they give up all that for a rental?
